Welcome to the "Pre-Election Hodge-Podge" Edition of the Greenberg Commentary.

(Indianapolis, IN) - Two headlines from today's Washington Post that, I think, speak volumes about the Democratic choice for President:
  1) Gore tries out new campaign style
  2) Bradley aims at child poverty

The U.S. Senate yesterday took a vote on overturning Roe v. Wade.  Mind you, it was a non-binding vote - they just wanted to see how everybody felt.  Oooh, here's a thought: next, could we find out how you feel about education, HMO reform, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, federal housing funding, and the budget?!

Anybody who has seen "American Beauty": doesn't Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) look like the ex-Marine father of Jane's boyfriend?

Sen. Jesse Helms is blocking President Clinton's nomination of former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun to be Ambassador to New Zealand.  Despite Moseley-Braun's lackluster Senate career and checkered past, Helms gave as his primary motivator that Moseley-Braun blocked his 1993 effort to renew a
patent for the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  Rumor has it that Helms and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, a member of a racist organization in his home state of Mississippi, are threatening to burn a cross on the White House lawn if the nomination is not rescinded.  No comment from Secret Service as to whether or not Klan rituals are allowed at the executive mansion...apparently it hasn't been an issue since George Schultz left.

I'm inventing a new award to be given by TGC (that's The Greenberg Commentary...stop laughing).  Every issue of this commentary will include a winner of the "Danny."  In honor of all the stupid Hoosiers named Dan - Quayle, Burton, and Coats are but three particularly dim lights - the "Danny" will be given to the most deservingly moronic public figure to gaffe, inhale, sexually assault, offend, oppress, or otherwise call attention to him/herself during the period in between Commentaries.

AND THE "DANNY" GOES TO:
Sen. Bob Smith (Too Far Right-Wing Even for Republicans-NH).  During Senate debate yesterday on the partial-birth abortion ban, Sen. Smith gave voice to
the true motivator behind every Republican action of the past 5 years: "Just one time! Let's beat President Clinton.  He's won on everything. ... I'm sick of  losing."  Smith better get used to losing...in 2002, he's up for his first election since bolting the Republican Party.

Think he's full of it? Tell him so.        Think he's right?  Let him know.
