(Mt. Prospect, IL) - Over the past few weeks many of us have exchanged similar opinions on NC Senator Jesse Helms recent battle to deny former Illinois Senator Carol Mosely Braun the Ambassador position to New Zealand.  This was one of the few issues that our beloved liberal friend from Indianapolis Mr. Greenberg and
myself were in complete agreement with.  Both of us and all of you agreed that Helms was on a personal vendetta against Braun.  Braun led a massacre defeat against Helms in 93 blocking a bill concerning displaying the Confederate Flag.  Helms did admit it was personal and this was the reason. He never mentioned that the fact she is a woman, black and liberal also played apart in his crusade, but any one who knows Mr. Helms background and record knows he has a white hood in his closet and a room with a shrine to Hitler.

The other day Braun was confirmed by a vote of 96 to 2.  Helms said no, but so did the senator who replaced Braun, Peter Fitzgerald.  When interviewed by
Sun-Times Reporter Lynn Sweet, Fitzgerald said that a yes vote would be hypercritical.  He contended as I did weeks ago that the fact she has was a bad candidate for moral and ethical reasons is why he said no.  Fitzgerald from the start stated that Helms vendetta was wrong and that the senate needs to look at her Ethics.

Braun to this day has left many small businesses in the black community hung out to dry because she never paid her campaign debt. We all remember the Nigeria incident, visiting the country on tax payer money to see her admitted friend the murdering dictator of that country (name slips my mind).  She has demonstrated terrible judgment on numerous occassions and now she is being asked to represent our country to another nation.  She should not get this position for the reasons Fitzgerald voted no, not because Helms dislikes her personally.

In this situation, conservatives made the same mistake liberals made in 1991 concerning Clarence Thomas.  In 1991 Joseph Biden and his gestapo went after  Thomas because he was a conservative Black and he may of been a womanizing pervert.  However, the fact was that he was not qualified for the job at this point in his judicial career. However, the wrong reasons were used against him and that why he is a justice and will be for about 30 more years.  Helms should of brought up Braun's ethics not her skin color.
