Louis Stone's European Vacation

I arrived in London on March 10th early in the morning. I then had the unique privilege of waiting for a couple of hours while stalling for my friend, Liz, to finish teaching a class. I didn't bother taking a picture of Heathrow International as it appeared to me that there was only one area of the entire airport that wasn't under construction and that was the lady's room (judging by the traffic anyway).

After successfully stalling (read: figuring out why ATM's in Europe give you your card before the cash), I proceeded to the Underground Station.  It was here that I realized that brining a suitcase to Europe was going to be a costly mistake.  For some reason, the escalator wasn't working.  This would become a VERY common theme on my trip regardless of locale. I bought my ticket from the information booth because the automated machines do not accept bills.  Of course, in these coin-based European countries, it's hard for people to sneak up on you too.

A rather uneventful tube ride then ensued.  I had to change trains at King's Cross where, of course, there was no escalator.  I arrived at Archway Station (down escalator out of order) a tad early.  So I stopped at a nearby cafe where I managed to reveal myself to be American in approximately 3 seconds.  This after going to the trouble of not even packing sneakers for the trip because they are like wearing a target in Europe. I ordered a sandwich and said "No mayo."  The response from across the counter was, "Take Away?"  I replied, "Yes.  Take away the mayo."  At this point, the lady after me in line, said "No. He's asking you if you want to take it away or eat it here."

Anyway.. Liz finally showed up and took me back to her place, which sits atop the SECOND most annoying hill in London.  She pointed out the Archway Bridge (of course the picture didn't come out) which apparently is one of London's most popular suicide spots (50 ft. swan dive into traffic). I dropped off my stuff, exchanged pleasantries, grabbed a couple of camera's and hit the ground running.
